Two carved pearl shell ornaments, one very old with slight red dirt colouration, and one new, on a hair string from Broome WA, purchased in the mid 1990s. Aboriginal carved pearl shell originating in the north west Kimberley region of Broome was traded through traditional routes and known to have been traded with Europeans since 1864. Pearl shells were traded engraved & unengraved, and were / are objects of beauty and power.
